1956年10月23日至11月4日，历时13天的事件给匈牙
利国家和人民带来了巨大的物质损失和人员伤亡。据不
完全统计，经济损失200亿福林，相当于匈牙利全年国
民生产总值的3/4。1991年匈牙利当局公布了一份当年
的绝密报告：
事件中死亡人数共计2700人，其中体力劳动者1330
人，大专院校学生44名，中学生196人。约13000人受
伤，另有约20余万匈牙利人成为难民。而苏联方面也付
出了722人死亡、1251人受伤的惨重代价。
32年之后，1989年1月27日星期五，匈
牙利政府宣布1956年事件不是反革命事
件，而是一场人民起义。
However, on 27 January 1989, the Historical Subcommittee of the Hungarian Communist Party declared 1956
a "people's uprising,"
officially rejecting the label of "counter-revolution." This established a precedent for open criticism of past political decisions and Soviet influence in Hungary.
