Nowadays, in the marketplace of any country; the various vitamins, multivitamins, minerals, dietary supplements have become popular world widely.

Those are called Orthomolecular Medicine coined by two-time Nobel Prize winner Dr. Linus Pauling  in 1968, the term means "right molecule", correct.

Core of Theory: It is a form of alternative medicine that claims to maintain human health through nutritional supplementation. The concept builds on the idea of an optimal nutritional environment in the body and suggests that diseases reflect deficiencies in this environment. Treatment should be to correct "imbalances or deficiencies based on individual biochemistry.

Common Substances: Treatments frequently utilize high doses - megadose of Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Coenzyme Q10, alpha-lipoic acid, zinc, and essential fatty acids, minerals, amino acids, trace elements will be the best treatment for the most of diseases.

The key is at making ite high concentration in the blood, which needs intravenous infusion in use or oral megadose in g/kg body weight. Because oral administration leads to excretion, the substance cannot be adequately absorbed.

The real cases of megadose Vc by intravenous infusion

In 2019, the Journal of Molecular Biology, Volume 34 reports a case.

M.G., a 25-year-old forensic psychologist from Ponce, Puerto Rico, was in his baseline state of excellent health when he began to notice classical flu-like symptoms, including fever, chills, muscle aches and pains, headaches, and nausea. He fought these symptoms as best as he could for a week. However, by the time this period had passed, he only had the energy to stay in bed with constant headaches and body pain. As it was, he went from approximately 170 pounds down to 155 pounds.

A rapid flu swab test was done which turned out positive.  We treated him with Intravenous Vitamin C (IVC) therapy which consisted of 1,000 cc of lactated Ringer’s solution containing 50 grams of sodium ascorbate, a pH-neutral form of vitamin C. This was infused over about one and a half hour. This same regimen was repeated for a total of 3 infusions over 3 days. All of the infusions were clinically uneventful and without discernible side effects.

The morning following the first IV, the patient noted that his body strength had improved dramatically. He also noticed that his headaches were gone. The morning after the second IV his appetite was improving and he was eating more as well.

All of the IVC infusions were given at the patient’s home. On day four he felt normal, but Vitamin C was continued to be given orally (2 g tid). The patient was also instructed to start taking a high potency multivitamin and mineral (1qd) in addition to CoQ10 (100mg qd) on a regular basis orally. In addition to Echinacea (500 mg bid for ten days).

In 2020, article 'Unusual' IV High-Dose Vitamin C Success Story in COVID-19 reports that a 74-year-old white woman presents to an emergency department in Flint, Michigan, after suffering with low-grade fever, dry cough, and shortness of breath for the previous 2 days. Then confirmed with the infection of SARS-CoV-2.

Clinicians start treatment with oral hydroxychloroquine 400 mg once and then 200 mg twice a day, along with intravenous azithromycin 500 mg once a day, zinc sulfate 220 mg three times a day, and oral vitamin C 1 g twice a day.

By day 6, given her rapid deterioration, the patient is intubated on an emergent basis and started on pressure-regulated volume-controlled mechanical ventilation.

On day 7, the second day of mechanical ventilation, at the request of the family when the patient develops ARDS, she is started on a continuous intravenous infusion of high-dose vita?min C (11 g /24 hours). Two days later, her clinical condition gradually begins to improve, and the clinicians discontinue supportive treatment with norepinephrine.

Two days later, her clinical condition gradually improved. On day 10, the fifth day of mechanical ventilation, another chest x-ray shows that both the pneumonia and interstitial edema have improved considerably. Her breathing status continues to improve over days 11-15. On day 16, she shows significant recovery. On day 16 of her illness, she still tests positive and is in stable condition with an additional 14 days of quarantine.

Myself test of the process of B3 taking effect

it said that the side effects of B3 are itching and redness of the skin. There are reports describing turning whites into Indian celebrities. In order to verify its safety tolerance, on Jan. 25, 2020, I bought a bottle of B-3 (Niacin), see the photo. I took 500mg x 2 in one time.

12:10, Orally took 500mg x 2with water.

12:27, I started to feel a slight hot and itching ...

12:38, Face, forehead, back of neck, outside of arms, were obviously hot, itchy ...

12:48, My thighs were hot and itching. There was a desire to scratch the outside of the arms.

12:50, I start to scratch the back, both sides of the belly. My thighs were obvious hot, itchy, and swollen.

13:05, The hot and itching begin to subside.

14:05, I still have the feeling of hot and itchy.

15:39, The skin of thighs and calves seems to be in slightly overheated water.

17:19, The skin of thighs and calves still felt hot, and the face was hot.

19:01, Only the face was hot, no itching all over the body.

The overall feeling was warm, itchy and was bearable.

Thanks B-3.

Canadian Dr. Abram Hoffer was the initiator in the use of the megavitamin therapy.

Canada is the birthplace of Orthomolecular Medicne

Abram Hoffer (1917 – 2009) was a Canadian biochemist, physician, and psychiatrist known for his "adrenochrome hypothesis" of schizoaffective disorders. According to Hoffer, megavitamin therapy and other nutritional interventions are potentially effective treatments for schizophrenia and other diseases.[citation needed].

Abram Hoffer was also involved in studies of LSD as an experimental therapy for alcoholism; the discovery that high-dose niacin can be used to treat high cholesterol and other dyslipidemias.

Abram Hoffer named niacinamide or niacin as Vitamin B3 and uses megadose B3 to cure schizophrenia; the results were excellent.

William Wilson, the setter for promoting megavitamins

Bill Wilson (1895 – 1971), an alcoholic addiction. He was the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). AA is an international mutual aid fellowship with about 2 million members worldwide belonging to approximately 10,000 groups, associations, organizations, cooperatives, and fellowships of alcoholics helping other alcoholics achieve and maintain sobriety.

In 1960, New York, Abram Hoffer introduced to Bill that high-dose vitamins could help alcoholics. Bill started taking niacin 3 grams per day. Within weeks, the fatigue and depression that had afflicted him for years disappeared. He assigned niacin to his 30 good friends to try, and they all achieved the same effect. Then Bill promoted the use of megavitamins in AA.

Later, Bill was excluded from AA members. These Bill-appointed doctor members felt he had no reason to use vitamins as a cure. For this reason, in December 1965, he wrote to distribution to AA members, in which he used B-3, and the name B-3 is popular used now globally.

Wilson conduct a group of mentally ill alcoholic use B3, and result was satisfied, then wrote paper The Vitamin B-3 Therapy: A Promising Treatment for Schizophrenia – and its high relevance to the field of alcoholism in December 1965.

In 2003, I special went Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, CAMH Library, Toronto, copied the paper.

The cover is as follow. (A.A. - Alcoholics Anonymous).

Dr. Linus Pawling, who named Orthomolecular Medicine

The paper inspired two-time Nobel Prize winner American chemist Dr. Linus Pauling, who coined Orthomolecular Medicine in his 1968 article Orthomolecular Psychiatry in the journal "Science" after read the paper of Bill Wilson.

Dr. Linus Carl Pawling 1901 –1994) was an American chemist, biochemist, chemical engineer, peace activist, author, and educator. He published more than 1,200 papers and books, of which about 850 dealt with scientific topics. New Scientist called him one of the 20 greatest scientists of all time, and as of 2000, he was rated the 16th most important scientist in history. For his scientific work, Pauling was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954. For his peace activism, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962.

Pauling was one of the founders of the fields of quantum chemistry and molecular biology.[9] His contributions to the theory of the chemical bond include the concept of orbital hybridisation and the first accurate scale of electronegativities of the elements. Pauling also worked on the structures of biological molecules, and showed the importance of the alpha helix and beta sheet in protein secondary structure.

Pauling's approach combined methods and results from X-ray crystallography, molecular model building, and quantum chemistry. His discoveries inspired the work of James Watson, Francis Crick, and Rosalind Franklin on the structure of DNA, which in turn made it possible for geneticists to crack the DNA code of all organisms.

In his later years he promoted nuclear disarmament, as well as orthomolecular medicine, megavitamin therapy, and dietary supplements.

None of the latter have gained much acceptance in the mainstream scientific community, but got a lot of criticizing and being refused to fund his clinical trial.

Abram Hoffer; Bill Wilson & Linus Pauling were attacked

Here I have to indicate the evil of Western medicine trained people, Dr. Abram Hoffer and Bill Wilson were both attacked due to advocate the use of B3 and ousted from their job position. Please Google online; there are still a lot of articles in condemning Linus Pauling regarding the use of the Orthomolecular Medicine.

Modern studies showed that Orthomolecular medicine has full cover therapeutic effects, such as:

The OM was originally intended to treat the “mental disease by the provision of the optimal molecular environment of the mind, especially the optimal concentrations of substances normally present in the human body.” OM currently is called as diet supplements that have developed many products, such as, Vitamins, minerals and so on.

Linus Paulin who published the Nature of the chemical bond in 1939. Later he did many pioneering works in understanding the nature of life from atomic structure, binding mode between atoms, nucleic acids and proteins. Whether from chemical, biological, and medical, he has laid a solid theoretical foundation.

Vitamin B-3 has wide range of physiological improvement functions. Its therapeutic process for psychotic is to restore damaged brain rather than as that of antipsychotic drugs control the abnormal secretions in the brain. Naturally, OM treats the diseases in a Holistic way.

Although, for decades, some people have been eagerly trying to deny the curative effect of OM, however, the physiological improvement function is coming clearer in both clinic and academic. Now it gains extensively application world widely. Vitamin C was the one of OM, which was Linus Pauling strongly recommended, also was strongly opposed by others. following are some of new researches on Vitamin C.

        1. Vitamin C Saves Lives! After Linus Pauling wrote his book on vitamin C in 1970, mortality from heart disease decreased 30-40% in the USA. From around 741,000 deaths per year to less than 500,000 deaths by 1986 - U. S. Bureau of National Health Statistics 1986.

        2. Vitamin C may be useful to treat cancer after all.

        3. Study shows vitamin C's cancer-fighting properties.

        4. Vitamin C beneficial in cancer treatment – study.

        5. How Vitamin C Stops Cancer.

In TCM, there are variety of nutritional constituents that are far more than that of in OM, which come from more than 10 thousands of plants, minerals and animals, such as, Ginseng, Gypsum and Placenta. They are certainly playing a significant role in the diseases treatment, but their unique contribution seems to have been ignored both clinically and academically. The reason may come from the TCM itself because that it never distinguishes the medicinal and nutritional, even without the concepts and terms, they were generally called as medicine.

In western medicine, Chinese medicinals generally called as alternative or diet supplements. I think that there is necessary to make a definition, such as, those with the effect of killing pathogenic agents should be called as medicinal, and those without the effect of killing pathogenic directly but with the role of physiological improvement should be called as nutritional, include those in Western medicine. A clear concept with a exact term will not only help clear describing, but also conducive to efficient thinking.

The determination of a definition is difficult that need to be discussed carefully because of the ingredient of many single herbs is compound that contains both medicinal and nutritional. Even if a single constituent also has a dual role, such as, some peptide is nutritional but also an antibiotic. The nutritionals in Chinese medicinals is a promising medical potential to be an attractive research direction.
