From military operations to commercial uses: The order of applications 

It is easier to destruct than to construct. Military operations generally have higher priority than commercial uses. Many foundational everyday technologies were originally funded and developed for military operations before finding major commercial uses. Here are some examples.


1. Global Positioning System (GPS)

  • Military Origin: Developed by the U.S. Department of Defense in the 1970s (NAVSTAR GPS) to allow high-precision targeting for missiles, navies, and troops worldwide.


  • Civilian Transition: President Ronald Reagan opened GPS for civilian aviation safety in 1983 following the shooting down of Korean Air Lines Flight 007. The military initially degraded civilian accuracy ("Selective Availability") until 2000, when full-precision signals were opened globally, enabling modern turn-by-turn navigation, ride-sharing, and logistics tracking.


2. The Internet (ARPANET)

  • Military Origin: Began in 1969 as ARPANET, funded by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The goal was to build a decentralized, fault-tolerant communication network that could survive partial destruction (such as a nuclear strike) using packet switching.


  • Civilian Transition: Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the underlying protocol (TCP/IP) expanded through academic research networks (NSFNET) before fully commercializing into the modern World Wide Web in the early 1990s.


3. Microwave Ovens (Radar Tech)

  • Military Origin: During WWII, cavity magnetron tubes were invented to generate high-frequency radio waves for short-wave radar systems, allowing Allied forces to detect enemy aircraft and ships at night.


  • Civilian Transition: In 1945, Raytheon engineer Percy Spencer noticed a candy bar in his pocket melted while working near an active magnetron. This led to the creation of the commercial "Radarange" in 1947, eventually evolving into the countertop microwave oven.


4. Digital Computing & Microprocessors

  • Military Origin: Early electronic computers were commissioned exclusively for wartime calculations:


    • ENIAC (1945): Built for the U.S. Army to compute artillery firing tables and simulate nuclear weapon yields.


    • Colossus (1943): Built by British codebreakers at Bletchley Park to decrypt Lorenz-ciphered German military command transmissions.


5. Epoxies and Synthetic Polymers (Duct Tape, Super Glue)

  • Military Origin:


    • Duct Tape: Created during WWII by Johnson & Johnson for the U.S. military, which needed a waterproof, durable tape to seal ammunition cases and make quick repairs on military equipment.


    • Super Glue (Cyanoacrylate): Discovered accidentally in 1942 by Eastman Kodak scientists searching for clear plastic materials to make precision gun sights for warplanes.


  • Civilian Transition: Post-WWII, returning soldiers used the waterproof cloth tape for housing repairs and air-duct sealing (coining "duct tape"), while cyanoacrylate was commercialized as "Flash Glue" and "Super Glue" in 1958.


6. Jet Engines and Rocketry (Spaceflight)

  • Military Origin: Early liquid-fueled rockets (such as the German V-2 rocket in WWII) and ballistic missiles (ICBMs) during the Cold War were designed to deliver warheads across continents.


  • Civilian Transition: The space race adapted these military missile airframes—the Soviet R-7 ICBM launched Sputnik and Yuri Gagarin, while the U.S. Redstone and Atlas missiles launched the Mercury and Gemini civilian space programs.
