这是16世纪英国人Thomas Tallis（1505-1585）的名作。同文艺复兴时期西方绝大多数艺术作品一样，歌词出于基督教圣经（新约约翰福音14），也是较早的英语圣歌。
Tallis所生活的时代是宗教改革(Protestant reformation)兴起的年代。1517年，马丁路德怒批罗马教庭，随后西、北欧数国包括英国弃天主教，兴新教（protestanism)，改用各民族自己语言而不是拉丁语使用圣经、做礼拜。1535年，Tallis30岁那年，第一部英语圣经印刷出版。此曲作于1560年代，歌词出自当年刚开始使用的英文圣经。
