Motivators for sexual activity among women who are cancer survivors: a cross-sectional study

[Extract] Sexual health is a key component of quality of life (QOL) among women who are cancer survivors.1,2 With increasing survivorship rates, addressing QOL issues such as sexual health becomes increasingly important. Exploring motivations for sexual activity among cancer survivors may help define patient-centered priorities when addressing sexual health during and after treatment.
To our knowledge, no quantitative study has examined motivations for sex in a sample of women who are cancer survivors. The objective of this study was to understand the reasons why survivors of breast and pelvic cancers engage in sexual activity to inform the development of effective, patient-centered interventions to prevent and mitigate sexual dysfunction and improve sexual health and QOL after cancer treatment.
This study was guided by the preparation phase of the Multiphase Optimization Strategy (MOSt) 3 framework to develop a conceptual model of change to improve sexual QOL for cancer survivors anchored on biopsychosocial models of sexuality and sexual response.2 The preparation phase involves defining the basic elements and candidate treatment components of a patient-centered intervention. Study participants were?>?18 years old, English or Spanish speaking, and had finished local radiation treatment for breast or pelvic (anal, rectal, uterine, cervical, vaginal, vulvar) cancers at least one year prior. Participants varied in other aspects of cancer treatment, including systemic or surgical therapies, but all received local radiation. Participants were recruited prospectively by radiation oncology clinicians at follow-up visits from 2022 to 2024. Clinically-annotated quantitative patient-reported survey data were collected to assess the impact of cancer treatments on sexual activity and function using validated questionnaires, including the Why Have Sex Short Form Questionnaire (YSEX?-SF) with permission from the authors.
