The True Value of Muscles

Peter Lee

Muscles are far more than a symbol of strength — they are a vital foundation of human health.

The aging of the human body is closely linked to the loss of muscle mass. During youth, muscles are full and powerful, the body is elastic, and the skin is firm and radiant. As we grow older, muscles gradually diminish, the skin loosens and wrinkles appear — clear signs that the body is entering its aging phase.

The importance of muscles extends far beyond outward appearance. Strong muscles protect bones and joints, promote bone density, and enhance blood formation. When bone marrow produces blood efficiently, circulation improves, and the body’s systems function more smoothly.

More importantly, muscles play a crucial role in stabilizing blood sugar levels. They act like a biological “capacitor”: when blood sugar rises, muscles absorb glucose; when it drops, they release it. This “peak-shaving and valley-filling” mechanism helps maintain steady blood glucose levels and ensures the continuity of vital energy supply.

Developed muscles also support the cardiovascular system. Strong core and leg muscles enhance heart and lung function and assist the return of blood to the heart. Weak leg muscles, on the other hand, can hinder circulation and contribute to problems such as varicose veins.

In addition, muscles are the main engine of energy metabolism. The more muscle mass one has, the more efficiently glucose is metabolized, leaving less chance for fat to form. This helps maintain a healthy body weight. Conversely, people with little muscle mass burn fewer calories, allowing fat to accumulate — which in turn raises body weight and blood pressure.

In summary, muscles are the cornerstone of human health. They give the body vitality and resilience, but more importantly, they sustain blood formation, circulation, and metabolic balance. Rather than relying on medication, one should build muscle through regular exercise — it is the most natural and effective medicine of all.
