A Lost Wallet

My friend once told me a true story. One day, he lost his wallet, which contained a considerable amount of cash. Later, when he retraced the route he had taken, he was fortunate enough to find the wallet—returned by an honest finder.

“It’s your lucky day,” I said.

“Yes, indeed,” he replied.

“Did you check whether any money was missing?” I asked.

“Why should I check?” he said calmly.

“Well, the finder might have taken some cash—just in case,” I suggested.

He looked at me and asked, “Even if that were true, what could I do?”

His question left me silent for a moment. Then I laughed and said, “You are a wise man!”

We both laughed together.

Dear readers, do you know why my friend said he didn’t need to check the wallet? Because even if some cash was missing, he could neither prove how much was there before, nor accuse the finder of taking it. The finder was already kind enough to return it voluntarily. To suspect would only spoil gratitude; to remain unaware preserves peace.

This simple story carries a quiet wisdom: in life, not every truth is worth uncovering. Some things are beyond our control — you cannot reclaim them even if you find out they are lost. To dwell on such matters would bring nothing but frustration and disturbance. Sometimes peace lies not in knowing, but in choosing unknowing; not in questioning, but in gratitude. When one chooses trust over suspicion, serenity over doubt, and acceptance over worry, one preserves both the dignity of others and the harmony of one’s own heart.
