Back to Mother's Arms (Poem)
Back to Mother’s Arms
— For Death, As Beautiful As Birth
by Yuan Jinhua and this blogger*
When I was born,
my mother welcomed me into this world.
When she left,
I gently sent her back
into her own mother’s arms.
A newborn cry
brought her a knowing smile.
She leaned down
and softly kissed my cheek.
I opened my eyes,
as morning sunlight warmed her face—
and I lay quietly
in my mother’s arms.
A silent smile
called forth my quiet tears.
I kissed her gently,
as she slowly closed her eyes.
The sunset flushed her face—
she turned
toward her mother’s arms.
I held her cooling hand
and walked her out of my time.
“Goodbye, Mama...”
At the doorway beyond,
her mother stood with open arms,
a gentle smile upon her face:
“My child, welcome—
back to your mother’s arms.”
