Pyramids outside Mexico City
?Pyramids outside Mexico City
After arriving at Mexico City, I heard about pyramids outside the city. They are much less known than the Maya pyramids. They must be much smaller than the Maya pyramids, I assume.
It is about an hour’s drive from the city. The pyramids turn out to be giant structures, much larger than the Maya ones. There are two pyramids, Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon, connected by the broad Avenue of the Dead.
The pyramids and the surrounding community was built around 200 AD, about two thousand years ago. When Aztec conquered this area, abandoned long ago, they called them the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon, and the connecting structure Avenue of the Dead. They thought the pyramids were for the worship of sun god and the moon god. They thought the connecting structures were a series of tombs, hence the Avenue of the Dead. But modern archaeological studies show that those prominent structures are not tombs. More recent studies also suggest that the larger pyramid was probably for the worship of Rain God. This makes sense, for the area is very arid. The area is very humid by the Mexican standard. Still, it is very dry, cactus is all around, trees mostly have waxy leaves. So, is the Pyramid of the Sun really the Pyramid of the Rain?
