【注】阿加迪尔“堡垒”城被誉为摩洛哥柏柏尔“自由人”文化之都，是唯一使用三种语言的地方：多数人的母语——“盔甲”(Tashelhit)、摩洛哥阿拉伯语和法语。
1911年7月，德国向堡垒城派遣“黑豹”号炮艇(Gunboat Pather)，试图挑战法国在摩洛哥的权利，这是继1905年之后第二次引发摩洛哥危机，法国和德国的紧张关系由此暴露无遗，深度强化了协约国与同盟国之间的国际冲突，预示着第一次世界大战的爆发。
1912年—1956年，法国对该地区实行长达44年的殖民统治。
1960年，堡垒城惨遭地震摧毁，但重建之后已然成为摩洛哥最大的海滨度假胜地，更是北欧人向往的“冬日阳光”。
