That the glass would melt in heat,
That the water would freeze in cold,
Shows that this object is merely a state,
One of many, between two poles. So,
In the metaphysical, there are these poles.
Here in the centre stands the glass. Light
Is the lion that comes down to drink. There
And in that state, the glass is a pool.
Ruddy are his eyes and ruddy are his claws
When light comes down to wet his frothy jaws
And in the water winding weeds move round.
And there and in another state – the refractions,
The metaphysica, the plastic parts of poems
Crash in the mind – But, fat Jocundus, worrying
About what stands here in the centre, not the glass,
But in the centre of our lives, this time, this day,
It is a state, this spring among the politicians
Playing cards. In a village of the indigenes,
One would have still to discover. Among the dogs and dung,
One would continue to contend with one's ideas.

玻璃杯受热会熔化，
水遇冷就会结冰，
表明物体的状态所在，
众多形式之一，介于两极之间。因此，
抽象地说，就有这些极点。
玻璃杯放在中心。光束
是前来喝水的狮子。至此
以那种状态，玻璃杯是水池。
他的眼睛红通通而他的爪子赤艳艳
当光线照射下来他口吐唾沫时
水中杂草交错纵横。
至此以另一种状态——折射、
形而上学、诗歌的可塑部分
在脑海碰撞——但是，逸乐胖子，惦念
处在中心的东西，而不是玻璃杯，
但以我们生活的中心，本次、这天，
所及状态，今年春季为打牌的
政客所共有。在土著村落里，
人们仍待发现。在犬群与狗屎之间，
人们会继续应对自己的理念。
【注】鸽子环岛紧邻超奢华的亿万富豪街(Billionaires Row)与德意志银行纽约总部或前时代华纳“武装卫队”中心(Time Warner Center)，离美国自然历史博物馆、艺术与设计博物馆不远，既是纽约市最繁忙的交通枢纽之一，也是通往中央公园的主要大门。
近年来，因为西裔在美国社会政治地位的崛起，越来越多曾经深受西班牙统治的南美洲移民要求去除“鸽子”塑像，以反对这位探险家所代表的野蛮、奴役、掠夺和压迫的历史，正所谓“文明”的代价，纽约当然也不例外。纽瓦克“新方舟”市长“和善·神慈·保佑”(Ras Jua Baraka)表示，拆除鸽子雕像“不应被视为对意大利裔美国人社区的侮辱”(附注：纽约的鸽子雕像是由意大利裔美籍社区捐赠的)。
