这曲美歌的背景知识：斯卡伯勒集市（Scarborough Fair），译作“斯卡布罗集市”，是一首英国传统民歌。 歌词里面，芫荽、鼠尾草、迷迭香和百里香(Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme)---是基督教之前，信仰类似萨满那样的万物有灵多神教德鲁伊信仰的原始印欧部族，比如维京人、凯尔特人等自然医学（巫医）传统里常见的草药与占卜草。也是一种古时女巫迷情药水的主配料。

香芹，象征“爱情”与“回忆”；有“停止心痛”的含意。

鼠尾草，象征“力量”；有“给予力量面对现实”的含意。

迷迭香，象征“忠诚”，因此它通常用于传统婚礼的习俗；有“请你不要忘了我”的含意。

百里香，象征“勇气”，因此它也在纹章学中占有一席之地；有“得到勇气继续迈向未来”的含意。

目前《斯卡布罗集市》最著名的版本，也就是西蒙与加芬克尔（Simon and Garfunkel）为电影《毕业生》所创作的主题曲(当年曾超过了披头士乐队的白色专辑，登上了1968年畅销歌曲排行榜的榜首)，主要使用了“原版”中“Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme”这一小部分。
