Fei-Fei Li warns U.S. AI backlash could slow global progress

Who is warning?: Fei-Fei Li, CEO of World Labs and leading AI researcher, says U.S. backlash against AI risks slowing innovation globally.

Why it matters: She calls for America to highlight AI’s benefits while addressing public concerns over energy use, jobs, and trust.

Global contrast: While U.S. skepticism rises, many Asian nations show more optimism about AI, linked to early education programs.

Fei-Fei Li sounds alarm on U.S. AI backlash

Fei-Fei Li, celebrated for her work on ImageNet, told Bloomberg that escalating U.S. skepticism toward AI could undermine progress worldwide. She urged the U.S. to act as a role model by promoting AI’s economic value and responding to public concerns. Her warning comes as Pew Research data shows many Americans are uneasy about AI, with resistance to data center projects citing high water and energy use. TechCrunch + 2

If we are not showing a positive attitude and positive path toward AI, everybody loses.

Li contrasted U.S. sentiment with more positive attitudes in parts of Asia, attributing the difference to early AI education efforts. She argued that without a constructive U.S. narrative, both domestic and global innovation could slow. Given America’s influence on technology adoption, its approach to AI will shape how other nations engage with the technology. pymnts.com + 2

Majority of Americans now wary of AI

According to Pew Research Center, 52% of U.S. adults say they are more concerned than excited about AI’s role in daily life, an increase from 37% in 2021. Among adults under 30, 55% now express greater concern than excitement, with job loss fears and environmental impacts from AI infrastructure among the factors influencing opinion. Polling also shows limited support for local AI data center projects, reflecting broader unease about their community impact. TechRadar Pro + 3

From ImageNet to World Labs: Li’s advocacy journey

Li’s career spans co-developing the ImageNet database to founding World Labs, which secured $1 billion in February to develop ‘world models’ aimed at advancing robotics, healthcare, and education. She acknowledged that the scientific community has not always communicated AI’s benefits effectively and expressed commitment to improving public engagement. Her advocacy centers on pairing innovation with trust to ensure AI’s benefits are broadly shared. pymnts.com + 2
